Kenya

“I first met Dr. James-Wilson during the first Decolonizing Education Conference at the University of Embu in 2018. It was after this conference that she became a Visiting Scholar in the School of Education and Social Science. This partnership has led to the establishment of the ArtLab at the Kangaru DEB Primary School which is intended to develop the capacity of teachers in Embu County to integrated art into the core curriculum through the ArtID Approach, and support the  study of child development in the East African context. We believe that our collaboration will progressively impact learning outcomes and enhance the retention and the progression of learners.

This is a pioneering  project in Kenya, and Dr. James-Wilson has been very resourceful in conceptualizing the project and designing the intervention plans.  She has not only put in time, but has been involved in resource mobilization to ensure the project achieves its objectives.  Her passion for the arts and fostering creativity in students will most definitely empower early childhood and elementary school teachers to able to integrate art in their classes, and we look forward to evolving this work overtime to include other countries in the region.” — D.  Ciriaka Gitonga: Dean School of Education and Social Sciences: University of Embu
